I've been using social media for career development before I began the CPD23 programme, and I know I will continue to use it after the programme is completed. -Though by social media I largely mean Twitter and (in a more limited fashion) LISNPN and LinkedIn.
One of the chief advantages is that of course that you can make contact with more people in the LIS community, but I find that this only works to a certain extent. I tend to find that contact via social media is only meaningful if you've met the individual you've added several times in person. I need the context of having met a person before their tweets (for example) make any sense to me.

That said, I have (as instructed) added a new twitter contact -that I've never met. Though it has not been successful for me in the past, I decided to add someone from my specific sector in the hope that the greater relevence of their tweets (well, perhaps, you never know with twitter) will then hold my interest even if I've never met them.

I love your post and the use of the gnome photos for affect. Social media is a mixed bag. Just have fun of it. I do enjoy your sense of humor.
